The Sign of Three melded comedy with drama wonderfully, seguing from murder to matrimony with any disconnect. The writing team's love of a nonlinear narrative reaches new heights in this episode, as Sherlock's rambling best man speech intercuts wildly with previous cases.
The Sign of Three took Sherlock in a very different direction to past episodes, resulting in one of the most complex and clever instalments of the BBC series yet.
Sherlock, you see, has done some growing up this season, constantly propelled forward by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat in brave and exciting ways that still hold fast to the authenticity of a character as well-known and loved as Sherlock Holmes.
While I am still enjoying every second of it, it is also becoming painfully obvious that this is a season not of legitimate brain teasers and villains, but of humanizing Sherlock.
The speech itself gets off to a slow start, to be sure, but includes perhaps the most touching tribute between friends in recent television history.
I don't mind a bit of fan service, but in a series consisting of three! This was a very entertaining, funny, and heartfelt episode that shouldn't be marred by nitpicking.
This is such an intricate and rich script, using Sherlock's best man speech to weave together flashback, character comedy, emotional exposition and a compelling mystery in The Mayfly Man.
The Sign of Three is a pretty grand exercise in changing the fundamentals of what many would think a Sherlock story should be.
