I know I owned it and there are things that happened in the film that seemed very familiar, character names and certain events. I know that this is the first time that I saw the film, though.
Max Von Sydow is great in it, as expected, and Ed Harris is also very good, but the one to…. Needful Things is the story of a wealthy businessman who decides to bring his special brand of services to rural America, and sets up shop in a quintessential small town.
What is his specialty? The businessman has a gift for appealing to people's unspoken desires and urges, playing on their neediness, their vices, their insecurities, validating and offering to satiate those source of want, and in the process also amplifying their worst traits, dividing them, and turning neighbor against neighbor.
I know watch you're thinking: "My, good thing this story is a work of fiction and people like that awful businessman don't actually exist!

Cheesy as hell and there was a better movie to be made here, but who cares; Max von Sydow and JT Walsh kill it, and Ed Harris is as good as expected despite the razor-thin character.
Plenty to love here as a goofball bit of Stephen King that actually does have lots to say. The 90s. When dramas had sweeping musical scores, made 2 hours feel like 4, and could get away with "the devil made me do it" as an excuse.
Catch my drift? The best horror movies are full of metaphors and allegory. His arc from asshole, to madman, to Renfield, to sympathetic and maybe even redeemed?
Pangborn as played by Ed Harris has always been my standard for the Castle Rock sheriff. Von Sidow…. Overall, Needful Things was fun, but I was a little bummed out to learn that there was a 4hr cut of the film that was never released on streaming or home media.

BOOK VS MOVIE - Needful ThingsThe town is named Castle Rock, after the name of the company that is releasing the film ho, ho. One day a new store, "Needful Things," opens up.
Its proprietor is played by Max Von Sydow, always an ominous sign that preternatural evil may be afoot. The store's stock is eclectic but comprehensive: It contains one each of every item that anyone in the town most deeply desires.
For a kid, a baseball trading card. For a gambler, a game that allows him to predict which horse will win. For an aging loser, the high school jacket he wore on the happiest day of his life.
For the priest, an antique chalice. No prizes for guessing the price of each of these items, as Satan enters names in his little book.
There's not a person in town who won't sell his soul, except for Pangborn Ed Harris , the police chief who has a skeleton in his closet.
Some of the others seem nice enough, until they wander into the store: like the waitress, Polly Bonnie Bedelia , who gets engaged to Pangborn, and the sweet bakery chef at the restaurant, Nettie Amanda Plummer.
Walsh , the corrupt assemblyman. Gaunt demands payment both in cash and in small "favors", usually pranks played by his customers on their neighbors.
Gaunt's first customer is a boy named Brian Rusk Shane Meier who buys a rare baseball card featuring Mickey Mantle in exchange for 95 cents and a prank on his neighbor Wilma Wadlowski Jerzyck Valri Bromfield.
Gaunt makes an impression on the town's people, on whom he pulls pranks. One victim of a prank is a corrupt boat salesman and gambler named Danforth Keeton J.
Keeton finds out from Sheriff Alan Pangborn Ed Harris that people are on to him and in turn he relays his fears to Gaunt and his hatred of those who refer to him as 'Buster' Keeton.
He also learns of the rivalry between the Catholic priest, Father Meehan W. Davis when he sells each of them objects from his shop.
The first hint of Gaunt's true nature is when he has Brian throw muck from the turkey farm onto the newly laundered crisp white sheets hanging on the washing-lines at the house of Wilma Jerzyck.
On returning home, Wilma assumes the devastation was caused by her long-time enemy Nettie Cobb Amanda Plummer. She goes and loudly accuses her of this at Nettie's workplace, the Castle Rock diner.
Brian Rusk meets Gaunt at the Lighthouse where he informs Brian he has not fully repaid his debt and expects payment in full right away.
Brian returns to Wilma Jerzyck's house and throws apples at her house to smash all the windows. Nettie Cobb has 'bought' a Hummel figurine from Gaunt that is identical to one her violent ex-husband had smashed in a fit of rage.
In return she goes to Dan Keeton's house and places Post-it notes , allegedly from Deputy Sheriff Norris Ridgewick all around the interior, accusing him of all his misdemeanors.
In the meantime, Gaunt has Hugh Priest kill Nettie's dog, in return for a s jacket like he wore at college. This sparks a violent fight between Nettie and Wilma, which gets them both killed.
Gaunt tells Polly for it to work she must never take it off. Keeton is found by Gaunt cowering in his shop with a gun. He tells Gaunt that he is thinking of killing Norris Ridgewick to stop him telling everyone about his misdemeanors.
Gaunt talks him out of it and takes the gun from him. Brian witnesses the investigation at Wilma Jerzyk's house and hears the sheriff musing over where all the apples came from.
Brian is shocked that his actions might in some way have caused this tragedy and tries to talk to Alan about what Gaunt had him do, but is too scared to do so.
At this point it becomes apparent that Gaunt is enjoying what is happening to the townsfolk and is not human, but a demon.
Alan later approaches Brian when he's alone at the lighthouse and asks what's got him so scared. Brian explains that Gaunt is a monster, before trying to shoot himself in the head.
The gun goes off but the sheriff manages to save the boy and Brian is hospitalized. Meanwhile, Alan begins to suspect that Gaunt may not be what he seems.
Father Meehan slashes the tires on Hugh Priest's truck. Hugh Priest sees what has happened to his truck when he is thrown out of the bar for being too drunk.
Alan returns from meeting with Brian and is now very suspicious of Gaunt. He tries to warn Polly and asks her to get rid of the necklace, but she is unwilling to remove it.
After Alan has gone she tries prying the necklace open to see what is inside and gets an electric shock which throws the necklace across the room.
Polly is immediately crippled by her arthritis and cannot reach to pick up the necklace. Gaunt appears in her bedroom and replaces the necklace on Polly's neck.
Polly is so grateful, she pays him immediately and is clearly mesmerized by Gaunt who then seduces her. After which he states that Alan is corrupt and has been embezzling money from the town with Keeton for years.
Gaunt convinces Polly to go to Alan's yacht to look for the money. Polly phones Alan from the yacht, accuses him of the crime, and in disgust calls off the engagement.
Keeton becomes afraid that everyone including his wife Myrtle Gillian Barber is out to get him, and Gaunt convinces him that he is his only ally.

The characters are very well written and fleshed out which gave them a much deeper emotional depth then most horror films which made it easy to invest in these characters.
Stephen King is the master at creating such unique villains in…. For the people of Castle Rock, the arrival of Leland Gaunt and his antiques shop seems to be a blessing.
Needful Things isn't the best big screen Stephen King adaptation but it's definitely not the worst either. His approach is somewhat routine and TV-like at times but he does have some fun with the various vindictive acts that the film's wickedly manipulative antagonist Leland Gaunt, played by the late Max Von Sydow incites various townsfolk to carry out as payment for the goods in his curiosity shop.
Von Sydow rises gamely to the sinister occasion. So does J. Walsh, who seems to be channelling Jack Nicholson as Danforth "Buster" Keeton, the town's corrupt mayor.
Ed Harris is great as usual playing the local sheriff who attempts to keep the peace. Your master's voice. How is it going?
